consultations

What happens at a consultation?

Visiting a medical herbalist is very much like going to see your GP. The main difference is, we will have much more time together, will aim to treat the whole person not just the ‘disease’ and the medicines you will be given are herbs/herbal extracts specifically tailored for you.

Initial Consultation

At the first consultation I will take a full case history which usually takes a couple of hours. We will go through in detail what you are looking for help with, review your previous medical history, each of your body systems, lifestyle and any medications you are taking. This will help me build up a timeline of the development of your condition and a picture of your current health. In addition there might be a physical examination and some basic health tests, such as blood pressure taking.

Follow ups

After the initial appointment we will meet again within a couple of weeks to review how you are getting on. It can take two or three appointments (sometimes less) to establish a helpful prescription. After this, we meet as needed usually about once a month to review and evaluate progress. As we work together your prescription will be tailored to suit your changing symptoms. Realistically if you have had your symptoms for a long period of time then it will take a long time to treat your symptoms.

What sort of medicines might I prescribe?

A liquid, alcohol based tincture is the simplest and most convenient way to take herbal medicine.  In addition you might be prescribed capsules, creams or teas to go alongside your tincture. It really depends on what you are looking for help with. We can easily devise a treatment plan without alcohol if that is preferred. In addition to herbal medicine we will look at diet and lifestyle changes too.
